All Iona students have the opportunity to participate in interschool competitions, which give them access to a high level of competitive sport. These competitions include the Independent Girls' Schools' Sports Association (IGSSA), Associated and Catholic Colleges (ACC), State School Sports and other private competitions.
Students are encouraged to participate in at least one sporting activity per term. Being involved in an interschool team enhances fitness, physical well-being and socialisation skills. There's also great enjoyment in experiencing the Iona sporting spirit!
Sports achievement awards are given at Iona, and the criteria for these awards are stated in the College Student Diary.
When a student commits to being part of a sporting team, she is committed for the season, which includes attending all training sessions and games. It is an honour to be chosen for a team at Iona and a student is selected because she has shown that she has the ability to participate and fully commit herself.
Many different levels of sport are catered for at Iona, from the elite sportsperson to those who are still developing their skills. Iona has had students who have represented Australia in their chosen sport. We also have students who have never played a particular sport but would like to learn. Iona tries to cater for everyone and all are welcome to be involved.
At present Iona is involved in the following interschool sports:
- Athletics
- Basketball
- Cross Country
- Gymnastics
- Hockey
- Netball
- Soccer
|
- Softball
- Surfing
- Swimming
- Tennis
- Volleyball
- Water Polo

ATHLETICS
Due to the commitment of our athletes and their coaches, Iona has done very well in interschool athletics competitions in recent years. Iona's Athletics Team has placed highly over the past few seasons in the IGSSA competition and has won the ACC competition a few years running. The College has specialised coaches for each of the events.
BASKETBALL
Basketball is an excellent source of physical fitness and is both social and enjoyable. IGSSA Basketball at Iona is played in Term Three.
CROSS COUNTRY
Cross Country training is scheduled each weekday morning throughout the season. The Cross Country squad is usually chosen from the results of the Inter-House competition. However the invitation to come and join these morning training sessions is extended to all in the Iona community, whatever your current level of fitness and running ability may be. A Team of about 50 competitors is selected to represent Iona Presentation College at the IGSSA, ACC and State Schools Interschool Cross-Country events.
GYMNASTICS
In the past, Iona has entered gymnastic teams into the Western Australian Gymnastics State School Championships. If the interest is there, this opportunity will continue.
HOCKEY
Iona selects six teams to compete in the weekly IGSSA competition in Term 2.
NETBALL
Netball has the highest level of female participation of any team sport in Australia. Iona selects seventeen teams to compete in the weekly IGSSA competition in Term 2.
SOCCER
Iona students were overjoyed when soccer was introduced into the IGSSA competition in 2007. Several senior, junior and Years 7/8 teams are always selected.
SOFTBALL
IGSSA Softball is a Term 4 sport at Iona. Four senior teams (Years 10 & 11) and six junior teams (Years 7, 8 & 9) are selected for the interschool games.
SURFING
Iona annually enters the School Surfing Title. Students who enter have usually had pre-exposure to surfing in Outdoor Education or Physical Education Studies classes. The Title is a one day zoned event, with winning teams going through to the finals round.
SWIMMING
Iona's Swimming Squad is selected from the results of the Interhouse Swimming Carnival.
Members of the Iona Swimming Squad have the chance to compete in the IGSSA and ACC Swimming Carnivals, as well as lead-up swimming meets.
TENNIS
Iona's tennis teams train and compete in weekly IGSSA matches in Term 1. Some players also choose to compete in the Coca Cola State Schoolgirls' Classic.
VOLLEYBALL
Volleyball requires great communication, leadership and self-discipline. It is a fun sport where the girls become an integral member of a team in a friendly environment. There are clearly defined pathways for junior volleyball players, from school competitions, to representing WA at the National Junior Championships.
WATER POLO
Water Polo has been one of Iona's sporting strengths for many years, having produced such talent as Danielle Woodhouse and Bridgette Gusterson (Gold Medallists at the 2000 Sydney Olympics). The College produces seven highly competitive teams in both the junior competition (Years 7, 8 & 9) and the senior competition (Years 10, 11 & 12). Matches are either held at Challenge Stadium or Bicton Pool. |
