Each Year group at Iona is divided into smaller groups called form classes. This is the starting point of Pastoral Care at the College. Each form class has a form teacher who has daily contact with the girls and cares for their general welfare. Form teachers liaise with staff and parents and are a source of communication and information for the girls.
Parents should make their daughter’s form teacher the first point of contact if there is an emotional or social issue involving their daughter. Classroom teachers also consult the form teacher if there is a problem with a particular student's work or behaviour.
Students meet with their form teacher four mornings a week for twenty minutes. During this form period, students are rostered to read prayers appropriate to the liturgical season or in response to local and world events. Form Messages are also read out to students during this time. These messages are the main source of communication and information for students.
Student absentees are noted and reported to reception during the form period. If a student is absent and the College has not received communication from parents or guardians as to why, the College Receptionists will contact the girl’s parents in order to establish her safety.
Each form teacher also joins their form class at Year Level Assemblies. During YLAs, form teachers assist the Head of Year to deliver the Pastoral Care program. This program includes guest speakers and activities that assist students with social, emotional and spiritual welfare. Form teachers also attend the major social activities that involve their form’s Year group.
Whilst confidentiality is always respected, form teachers will consult parents, the Head of Year, the College Psychologist and/or other staff members if help is required to look after the well-being of a student.
