Laughter Yoga at Iona Presentation College
Students at Iona Presentation College are learning about the many benefits of laughter and having a lot of fun while doing so.
The College is running Laughter Yoga sessions and they have been a hit for students and teachers alike.
"We have so much fun. The laughter is really therapeutic, during the sessions we just laugh our worries away," said Brooke Andrews (Year 11).
"Sometimes I think you just have to look around and laugh, just laugh. It really is the best medicine when you let loose and forget about all of life's complications," said Anna Harris (Year 11).
Laughter Yoga is an aerobic activity that turns fake or forced laughter into the real thing. Students take part in breathing exercises while enjoying playful laughter exercises.
"The initial idea for the group came from the desire to help students experiencing anxiety and stress, particularly during busy times in the term and especially when undertaking assessments," said Michelle Perche, Learning Enhancement Coordinator.
"Laughter Yoga is part of our Mindfulness Meditation sessions, which we have devised to help students stay balanced, focused and aware of the importance of maintaining a peaceful heart and mind.
During the Mindfulness Mediation sessions, the group tries different meditation styles with a variety of approaches. This allows the girls to see what works best for them. They also discuss positive affirmations, mindful practices and laughter yoga sessions.
"Sometimes people need to be more open to laughing, just have a go at it!" said Anna Harris.
The Mindfulness Group is open to students from Years 7 to 12. It is run in the 'Meditation Room' during lunchtime on Fridays.
