Year 12 Geography students discuss 'Water for our Future'
What are you doing to adapt to climate change?
How is your household contributing to the sustainability of Perth's water supply?
These were the questions asked of our Year 12 Geography students when a representative from the Water Corporation joined them in class this week.
The presentation focused on the challenges of climate change and the increasing demand of water on the sustainability of Perth's water supply.
Students analysed the sustainability of Perth's current water sources and considered the importance and benefits of recycling wastewater as a future water source for Perth.
"We discussed the different things Perth is doing to sustain our water supply, how we use our ocean and desalination plants and water for our future," said Katelyn McCullough.
To ensure the sustainability of Perth's water supply, students said they should all make changes.
"My advice – take shorter showers, use your sprinklers wisely and turn off your reticulation in winter," said Aislinn Van Dongen.
Geography Teacher, Katherine Branchi said students had studied the issues related to our changing climate. Two of the strategies highlighted in the presentation, Desalination and Water Replenishment are examples of the adaptations the population of Perth will need to make to deal with our reduced rainfall and drying climate now and in the future.
The overall message from the students after the presentation - If we all work together; we can make a difference.
