The importance of water – a lesson for our Year 7 students
Our Year 7 students took part in a very interested quiz about water this week.
Can you answer some of the questions they were asked?
How long does 1 gigalitre of water last in summer?
Where does Perth's water come from?
Is an aquifer an underground lake?
A representative from the Water Corporation joined the girls for a very interesting discussion about Perth's water. The students learned about the processes of desalination, evaporation, condensation and precipitation. They spoke about Perth's three main water sources – groundwater (42%), dams (17%) and the ocean (41%), and how limestone can absorb very large amounts of water due to its porous nature.
"I was really interested in the facts we learned about water, like what we use it for and how we can recycle it for the future," said Charis Jones.
They had some great questions about groundwater, bores, desalination and the future of Perth's water supply.
"Water is a precious resource because it is limited and we need it for everything," said Remedy Crookes.
"A message I can take home is that we should not waste water and we should aim to have four minute showers," commented Isabella Martin.
