Congratulations to our World Scholar's Cup Teams
This year was the 10th Anniversary of World Scholar's Cup, making the epic Global Round in Hanoi, Vietnam, particularly special.
3600 competitors from 372 schools and 36 countries came together as one community, to celebrate learning in a collaborative, challenging and exciting atmosphere. This number was comprised of 11 Australian schools, with five of these from Western Australia. There were 16 schools in total competing from our region; Australia/Americas.
Iona Presentation College had five wonderfully successful teams compete; one in the Skittles Division, three in the Junior Division and one Senior Team. All students embraced the challenge with gusto. Their results are the finest they have accomplished, justly rewarded with the girls' sense of achievement, gained knowledge and independent learning skills.
The camaraderie between the girls was exemplary and added a special shine to our team. All students gained a plethora of medals and trophies, as each component of the competition was celebrated at an individual and team level.
A total of 67 medals and 9 trophies were awarded to our girls.
In the Senior Division, our team came second overall for Australia and seventh in the Writing Division. Also across this division at an individual level, Talliah Galindo came second in Literature, with Alexandra Prichard gaining fourth place for Literature and ninth in Science.
In the Junior Division, the team of Sophie McPhail, Amelia Edwards and Bridget Garbellini placed a commendable fifth for the Region of Australia/America's. Amelia Edwards came an eleventh in the Individual Writing Division.
Our Year 7 team in the Skittle Division came a distinguished first overall for Australia and the Region, and third overall in the Division, which also included second in the Team Writing Division.
A phenomenal overall first in the division for Amy Mance, which included first overall individual for Iona, Australia and our region, plus fourth in Writing, fourth in History and fifth in Debating. This culminated in Amy being chosen for the Debate Showcase, where the best of the best debate in front of the Skittles and Junior Divisions. Jasmine Goodall was awarded second Top Scholar for our region.
Of our teams, the Senior Team will be competing in the finals, Tournament of Champions, held at Yale University in November this year.
I was honoured to be awarded 'Coach of the Year' for 2017. I was awarded 'Coach of the Year' for excellence in my commitment to the students and the program; coaching the girls while providing support and an environment to engage and foster individual and collaborative independent learning, that is enjoyable and purposeful; and my support of the WSC throughout the community along with my contribution to the adjudication of the debating.
