FAQS

WILL THE REDEVELOPMENT RESULT IN INCREASED STUDENT NUMBERS AT IONA?

No, it will not.  The redevelopment is about increasing the quality of the student experience.

WHAT WILL THE DEVELOPMENT MEAN FOR IONA'S ICONIC RIVERSIDE HERITAGE?

The development has been specifically designed to retain the charm and natural beauty of our Mosman Park campus.  This includes the maximum retention of green space and our much-loved trees.

WHAT IMPACT WILL THE DEVELOPMENT HAVE ON PARKING AROUND THE COLLEGE GROUNDS?

Traffic and parking management have been integrated throughout every phase of the planning process. This will continue through the building process if approved.  This includes adding more parking at each stage of the proposed development. The College has already implemented initiatives such as a kiss 'n drive and the employment of a traffic warden during peak times, and actively encourages students to use alternative methods of transport.

WHEN WILL THE REDEVELOPMENT WORK BEGIN?

We hope to begin construction within the next two to three years but this is subject to the approvals process.

WHAT IMPACT WILL THIS PROPOSAL HAVE ON STUDENTS?

Other than providing a new, contemporary learning environment, the College is committed to ensuring that this proposed build does not impact daily student life. As well, contractual obligations with builders will stipulate that special arrangements be put in place to carefully manage security, noise and conduct during the construction phase. Any necessary classroom relocation during the proposed build will be carefully managed, again to minimise disruption to students.

WILL THE TUITION FEES INCREASE AS A RESULT OF THE PROPOSAL?

The College is already making provision through its existing Facility Fee to fund the development.  There are no plans to increase the Facility Fee as a direct result.

HOW TALL ARE THE NEW BUILDINGS PROPOSED UNDER THE REDEVELOPMENT?

The new buildings are lower than the highest building currently on campus.  The new development will see taller buildings clustered on the middle part of our land meaning there will be no shadows cast on to neighbouring properties.

WILL I BE AFFECTED BY NOISE DURING THE BUILD?

The College will have in place contractual obligations with builders to stipulate special arrangements to carefully manage hours of work, noise and builder conduct (including keeping a tidy worksite, vehicle access and parking) during the construction phase.

HOW WILL THE REDEVELOPMENT AFFECT BOARDING AT IONA?

The First Stage of development requires the existing Library and Boarding House to be demolished. The College is planning to relocate boarders off-site during the development & construction stages, ensuring that they remain as close as possible to the College with easy access to facilities and in a secure environment. We are actively exploring the best options by which to achieve this.

The College continues to consider in detail how we might best cater for the needs of future boarding families from rural and remote areas in particular and we are conscious to ensure this transition away from on-site accommodation is managed with much care. We will continue to communicate regularly with the school community as our plans develop further and as we continue to explore options in conjunction with the Presentation Sisters, and the Catholic Education Office.
