Ballroom Dancing for our Year 9 girls
The Iona Presentation College Sports Centre has been bursting with nervous energy this term, as the Year 9 Iona Presentation College girls and CBC boys have been learning the Cha Cha, Foxtrot, Waltz, Tango and Quickstep. The students are preparing for their social in June, a very exciting event in the lives of the Year 9 students.
"I am really excited about meeting new people I haven't met before and having the opportunity to get to know some of the CBC boys. It has been great to learn a different side of dancing and learning to move with a partner," said Jordee Simmons.
"My favourite dance is the Cha Cha. It's a little different, unique, faster and a little bit groovy. It has been great to meet new people, outside our normal friendship groups," said Capri King.
Ballroom Dancing has an important history at Iona, dating back many years.
Students spend Friday afternoons working on the steps, perfecting their moves and developing confidence in dancing with the opposite sex.
"It's wonderful that some traditions still exist! We did Ballroom Dancing in Year 10 in 1978, in preparation for our 'Social.' Brother Leek would pick us up in the orange bus and take us down to CBC for our lessons with the boys," commented Deborah Searson, Class of 1980.
Students are encouraged to participate in a range of cultural pursuits whilst at Iona. Aimed at enriching each student's experience, some of the activities include the College Production, IGSSA Dance, Performing Arts Festival, Design Showcase Club and various music ensembles.
