Congratulations to our Shaun Tan Award for Young Artists Short-listed!
Congratulations to Bonni Davies (Year 11) and Indi Hopkins (Year 9) who have both been shortlisted for the 2026 Shaun Tan Award for Young Artists.
This means they are both in their respective top 20–25 of their age category, which is a huge, and very well deserved, achievement!
Bonni (Year 11 Visual Arts ATAR) artwork ‘Promenade at Macca’s’ cleverly juxtaposes Regency-era figures with a contemporary fast-food setting, creating a witty and insightful commentary on the timeless nature of friendship and social connection. Her refined oil painting technique and attention to historical detail highlight both her technical skill and strong conceptual thinking. Bonni’s work balances humour and sophistication, inviting viewers to reflect on how shared experiences across generations remain strikingly similar.
Indi (Year 9 Art), her granny, and her granny’s dog’s shared love of eating Smiths crisps was the inspiration behind her award worthy artwork. Created in her Visual Arts class, Indi learned the painting techniques of colour matching, tonal blending and applying shadows and highlights to imply 3-dimensionality in her work. Students studied the subject matter and painting style of WA Artist Elisha McGuckin, and selected a food that they loved eating as their subject matter. Indi’s chips certainly look good enough to eat!
In late June, there will be another round of judging that will determine the winners and exhibited final artists, so we wish Bonni and Indi every success in this next stage of the competition!
