Iona staff members recognised at the CEWA Breakfast
Five Iona staff members have been recognised for their service and leadership at the Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA) breakfast this week.
Lindsay Simon, Sr Mary Mackin and Michael Rebeiro were recognised for 40 years of outstanding service to Catholic Education.
Gemma Thomson and Katrina Prendergast were selected for LEAD Awards for Excellence, for the exciting and innovative projects they created for the students at Iona Presentation College.
LEAD (Leadership, Engagement, Accountability and Discipleship) Awards for Excellence were first presented in 2014, to acknowledge projects and initiatives by teachers and schools that practically demonstrate the four principles of Catholic Education WA's strategic direction.
Gemma's LEAD Award was in the Category of Discipleship, for the Year 11 RE General Presentation Faith in Action Project. The Project was focused on Year 11s, delivering practical, inquiry-based learning opportunities and increasing awareness of social issues. A website was created as the platform for guiding students through projects that touched their hearts, informed their minds and transformed their actions, now and in the future.
"Learning about homelessness has changed my perspective. I cherish those who give me opportunities to move forward and reach my full potential. I now have a better understanding of the need for the Church to help people. Sometimes in our lives, we all need guidance; the Church can help people find themselves and reflect on their purpose." – Sana, Year 11.
Katrina's LEAD award was in the category of Engagement for the Hyperscience program at the College.
"The Hyperscience course has allowed students to work on projects and extend their knowledge beyond the normal curriculum. More importantly, it has allowed students to be challenged and excited about their learning in a STEM context. The course offers students authentic learning opportunities and allows them to engage with industry professionals." – Debra Powell, Deputy Principal, Studies.
