Iona Presentation College

Academic Excellence

The Academic Excellence Program at Iona aims to identify and provide for highly able, gifted or talented students who would benefit from specific extension and enrichment activities, within the classroom Curriculum.

As students grow and mature, adjustments must be made according to individual learning needs. Adjustments may comprise any or all of the following as per the Australian Curriculum recommendations:

  • faster pace (acceleration, compacting)
  • greater breadth (enrichment)
  • more depth (extension)

Iona Presentation College recognises that further Curriculum adjustment may be required when students demonstrate that their capabilities are beyond the level of the advanced class. Where Curriculum adjustment is significant, an Individual Education Plan (IEP) may be required to meet a gifted student's need in a subject(s).

Individual opportunities for our gifted and talented students include, but are not limited to, such events as the Oxford Academy Conferences, the Talented Young Writer's Program, Da Vinci Decathlon, the Australian Mathematics Challenge, Philosothon and the United Nations Youth Conference.

Academic Co-curricular is also a strong component of providing for the promotion of collaboration skills, and critical and creative problem solving.

The implementation of the Academic Excellence Program places emphasis on the development of 21st century skills. Iona Presentation College also recognises the need to nurture qualities of curiosity, integrity, perseverance, pursuit of excellence, resilience and self-advocacy in our students.
