Senior Ethics Olympiad – Silver Medal and Honours
An Ethics Olympiad is a unique event where students analyse and discuss contemporary ethical issues.
Unlike traditional debates, participants are not assigned opposing views. Instead, they defend the position they believe is correct, striving to demonstrate careful, deep and perceptive thinking about the cases at hand. This event fosters ethical awareness, critical thinking, civil discourse, international engagement and an appreciation for diverse perspectives.
On Monday 12 May, our students grappled with eight thought-provoking cases, competing against teams from Western Australian schools.
The cases included:
- The Midnight Curfew – Is a curfew for teenagers likely to be effective in reducing crime and disturbances or are there better alternatives that could address these issues without restricting freedom?
- Spotify Surveillance and You – What counts as 'harmless' data collection? Is this different from 'ethical' data collection?
- Fixing Fiction's Flaws: The Dahl Dilemma – Under what circumstances might it be justifiable to retrospectively revise literature when the author can no longer consent?
Our Iona College teams engaged in these complex moral discussions with poise, insight, and philosophical rigour. Their commitment to ethical reasoning and open-minded dialogue was commendable.
We are delighted to celebrate the achievements of our students:
